Five things to know about the Knicks’ ticker-tape parade

The Mecca of basketball lies in New York City

“For the first time since 1973, the New York Knicks are your 2025-2026 NBA champions,” declared NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

This is a statement many Knicks fans never thought they would hear and it became reality when the New York Knicks secured their historic 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on June 13.

After more than five decades, one can only imagine the atmosphere in a city that hasn’t lost hope in their franchise.

From longtime fans who witnessed the team’s last title in 1973 to the newest generation of fans experiencing their first championship run, a roar of excitement and nervousness filled the streets of midtown, and echoed across the five boroughs as New Yorkers hoped to see the end of a 53-year old championship drought.

But the party’s just beginning.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani had announced via social media that the New York Knicks championship parade is set for June 18 ahead of Juneteenth and the pride parade celebration. The parade comes at a time where major cultural events and the World Cup are bringing excitement to NYC.

The parade starts at 10 a.m., beginning in Battery Park and continuing north up Broadway through the Financial District and ending at City Hall, where Mandani will give the team the Keys to the City.

Some are already comparing 2026 to the iconic summer of 2016, or perhaps, even better.

The city came alive on Saturday night and more united than ever, but those celebrations were only a preview of what is still yet to come. On Thursday, thousands of fans are expected to flood the streets of Manhattan for a historic moment for New York City and the Knicks Franchise.

Whether you are from one of the five boroughs, traveling from out of state, or country, here are five ways to prepare for a day many New Yorkers have waited a lifetime to experience:

1.) Arrive earlier than you think

Fans from all across the city and around the world are expected to gather in Manhattan to experience this historic night. And, for those hoping to secure front row seats along the parade route, arriving hours prior to the event starting once the time is announced is the best strategy.

Make sure you arrive with a charged phone, and that you have water, food and snacks, and, of course, your Knicks gear. Also, use the bathroom before claiming a spot. You’ll thank yourself later as large crowds tend to make it difficult to leave and return to the same spot.

2.) Dress for the occasion

The streets of Manhattan will be filled with all shades of orange and blue. Come to represent your New York Knicks in style from t-shirts, to jerseys, and custom made attire.

Along with wearing the right attire, ensure that you have on comfortable footwear as the championship parade tends to involve long hours of standing, walking, and navigating a busy crowd such as the one that will form in Manhattan on Thursday.

3.) Plan your trip to Manhattan in advance

Navigating New York City can be challenging on a normal day. A championship parade will take that to the next level and make it even more difficult..

So, for all New Yorkers and those traveling to the city for the first time, expect street closures, delayed trains, and traffic on the day of the parade.

Consider multiple options when making your way to Manhattan including walking to ensure you get to the parade on time. Public transportation may be the fastest way, but delays and overcrowding could affect travel times.

Most importantly, the goal is to ensure everyone gets there safely and avoid missing parts of the celebration due to delays.

4.) Have your Knicks’ story ready

One thing that separates a championship parade and ordinary celebrations is the personal connections the fans bring to these environments. The Knicks are a franchise built on stories, family traditions, and relationships.

From those who have lost loved ones to those raising families to those still navigating life, the Knicks represent the importance of sticking together — because you never know what someone is going through.

So ask yourself, what does the Knicks winning truly mean to me?

Expect to see homemade signs, photos, and souvenirs of what this moment means for a lot of fans that truly love their city and their team. For many fans, Thursday will be a day that’s bigger than basketball.

5.) Take in the moment

For new Knicks fans, this isn’t just a typical aesthetic parade. This championship parade reflects the decades of waiting, tears, heartbreak, loyalty, and consistent support from New Yorkers.

Fans who witnessed the championship in 1973 have waited most of their lives to see that moment again. Others will be celebrating this title for the first time.

Social media will be flooded with photos and videos of this exact moment but, put the phone down for a bit. The best memories won’t be from posting a reel or story but will be from the time you took to soak it all in.

For 53 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through numerous draft picks, trades, playoff exits, and constant slander at the future of this franchise, Knicks fans remained loyal. Fans believed that one day this team would bring a championship back home.

So come show out loud and proud with your orange and blue, plan ahead, and most importantly, enjoy the moment. Once the streets of Manhattan are filled on Thursday, you are no longer celebrating a feeling of excitement, you are celebrating history.

New York or nowhere!
